Installing LDraw for Windows

What is LDraw?

The term "LDraw" can be used to refer to the original DOS based LDraw program, the LDraw parts library, the LDraw file format or the LDraw system of tools. As you can see this can be very confusing for new users. For this tutorial LDraw will refer to the system of tools which you will be installing on your computer.

In a nutshell, LDraw is a free "CAD"-like set of programs that allows a user to create virtual LEGO® like models on your computer. You can use it to document models you have physically built, create building instructions just like LEGO, render 3D photo realistic images of your virtal models and even make animations. The possiblities are endless. Unlike real LEGO bricks were you are limited by the number of parts and colors, in LDraw nothing is impossible. You have an unlimited supply of virtual bricks in every possible color. Even colors that LEGO has never created!

As stated LDraw is a series of various programs. At the basic level you need at LEAST two of these applications.
Application #1: The original DOS-based Editor (LDRAW.exe now Ldraw027.exe) and
Application #2: The library of parts (complete.exe)

The parts library is the core of the program as it has over 1,200+ LEGO parts. Note that The ONLY brick we ENDORSE is LEGO although the parts format can be used for any other type of brick (MEGA Block, Block-it, etc). LDraw.org, however, DOES NOT SUPPORT OR ENDORSE these other types of bricks and they are NOT part of our official parts library. Also while our parts authors are hard at working creating new LEGO parts NOT ALL LEGO bricks are currently available in the library. The process is very hard and time consuming and our part authors are all volunteers. So be patience if the piece you are looking for is not in the library. If a part is not in the library you can check this web page (http://www.ldraw.org/library/tracker/) to see if the part is in production. Otherwise, you can post a request for a part creation to http://www.lugnet.com/cad/.

Most people find it very hard to use the original editor (LDRAW.exe) since it is a DOS based program with no graphical user interface. To overcome the limitation of the original DOS program several 3rd party editors have been created. An editor allows the user to create virtual models using a graphical windows interface in the process. Thus the 3rd application you would need would be an editor.
Application #3: MLCAD is the most popular of our 3rd party editors and is very easy to use if you are comfortable using Windows and the drop & drag concept.

Now if you want to create 3D images (renders) of your models that you created in LDraw you will need several more add-ons to LDraw.
Application #4: L3P
Application #5: L3PAO
Application #6: POV-Ray

See sample 3D images of what POV-Ray can do by visiting this webpage: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=37564

L3P is a DOS command-line program that takes your LDraw model file (.ldr or .mpd) and converts it into a POV-Ray file (.pov). L3PAO is a Graphical Interface to L3P which makes it extremely easy to use L3P because it displays ALL the options that L3P has with a bunch of checks and drop-down menus in a windows type program (NO need to 'see' DOS). It can even automate the process of creating your final rendered image in POV-Ray. POV-Ray is the ONLY non-Ldraw program of the bunch. It is used to create stunning 3D images of anything. Unfortunately it is primary for coders and 3D graphic artist. In most cases, a LDraw user will NOT have much luck getting POV-Ray to create stunning images like the ones seen at the POV-Ray website (http://www.povray.org/). Click on the Hall of Fame Link to see stunning 3D images. However, for the most part THESE images are OVERKILL as we just want a simple 3D image of our model. In any case you will need to have POV-Ray installed as well. The good news is that this installer gives you the option of installing all of the above applications and many more.

How do I install LDraw?

The installer file is 47.3 MB in size.

Step 1 Download the following file: ldraw_setup_2006q3_full_J.exe
NOTE: The file is protected by a Captcha image. Please type in the letters you see in the picture.
Step 2 Use 7-Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/) (recommended), winzip (http://www.winzip.com/) or winrar (http://www.rarlab.com/) to unzip the file. THIS STEP IS NO LONGER NEEDED.
Step 3

To start the installer double-click on the .exe.
Windows NT, 2000 and XP users, you must have administrator rights on your account in order to properly run this installer.
Windows XP Proffessional Edition Users run the installer in Windows 2000 Compatibility mode.

The following system files will be installed IF AND ONLY IF your system does not have them. Note that these files WILL NOT be uninstalled if you uninstall LDraw as some files are shared windows system files that may be used by other applications on your computer and removing them may cause those applications to become unstable.

Step 11 Screen 8 - POV-Ray Installation Notes Screen
Read CAREFULLY about how POV-Ray and MEGAPov will be installed on your system. Note that POV-Ray will call it's own installer and will NOT be uninstalled if you use the LDraw uninstaller icon. Complete the POV-Ray installer BEFORE closing the LDraw installer.

Figure 8: Special notes for the POV-Ray and MEGAPov installer.
Step 12 Either a thank you or restart screen will appear to signify the completion of the LDraw installer. You can safely delete the files you download now.
Step 13
(Optional)
If you do not see any or all the LDraw parts when using MLCAD it might be becuase the LDraw parts file (Parts.lst & P.lst) were not properly created during the installation. To create these two files use the MKLIST.EXE file located in the \LDraw folder. Double-click on the MKLIST.EXE and the window in figure 9 will appear.
Figure 9: Running the MKLIST.EXE file to create a new LDraw Parts List
Select "D" and wait until the DOS window closes by itself. You are done once it closes. If you ever add new LDraw parts to your library collection you will need to re-run MKLIST.exe to ensure that all the LDraw applications know you have new parts installed.
Step 14 (Optional)

When you launch MLCAD for the first time you will get an error pop-up window as shown in figure 10.

Figure 10: MLCAD asking for LDraw base path

Use the browse button to redirect MLCAD to the ldraw base path which for this installer is C:\LDraw as shown in figure 11.
