Yeah, as you guess I would have gone to 48 only. There are significantly bigger wheels done at 48 level, and they look good! Moreover this kind of structure works very well with primitive substitution, giving the best for everybody!

polygons flipped - done

This entire recess is slightly conical and rounded upwards in the inner corners - this corresponds exactly to reality ...
I don't see 4 polygons for an approximately 130 degree curve as overkill ....Willy

... apart from that, in this way, as it is now, I meet the corresponding vertex of the ring primitive.

The whole thing just pulling through would kill the realistic look and also - said in fun - I would still get a beautiful t-junction for free.

... it would be unfortunate to change that.
