Top studs are a bit high (0.25 LDU) relatively to LDD.

I purposefully placed them on 1 ldu grid to ease LDraw user work. Is this really a problem? I can change this easily, and as stud distances on this part seem to be a complete mess, it might not matter much anyway. Other opinions?

You're right, 1 LDU grid is easier.
This "error" would only be a problem when you import/export with LDD. And technic holes positions differ by 0.5 LDU and nobody cares, so....

We should not position our parts according to LDD.
There's a file called ldraw.xml in LDD taking care of any differences.
But if the position in LDD happens to be good and usefull within our grid,
the translation becomes very easy.

LDD/LDraw import/export is my reference.

I only remarked this little difference for this part because its geometry comes from LDD. I know LDD geometries are not always the most accurate but differing geometries between LDD and LDraw are a problem in that they cause collisions, connectivity errors, or inesthetic results, and can totally prevent import from LDraw to LDD (and at least cause more work to straighten things).

ldraw.xml only takes care of position and orientation of each part individually. It can't do anything if the LDraw version has its studs separated by X when the LDD version has them separated by Y. Parts attached to the studs won't be magically teleported to connect with the studs.

Here, if you place a plate on the top studs in LDD and export, the plate end up overlapping the top of the shield in LDraw. It could be a problem if you do that in order to render the LDraw version, especially if one of the parts is transparent.

If you put the plate in LDraw and import in LDD, the plate is a bit off the studs once imported. Again, 0.25 LDU is not a big deal and doesn't cause collisions nor does it break connectivity (the plates are still connected). There just is a tiny gap.

I suggest a more descriptive naming of this part before it becomes official, in comparison with the similar (but nonetheless in many ways quite different) 22409

Part is fine
Naming: I think it should mention the center Stud and the top two studs as well as the ridges in the side.

How about based on their rough appearance:
22408: Minifig Shield Pentagonal Smooth
22409: Minifig Shield Pentagonal Jagged

22409 barely qualifies as smooth!!! what about "with top suds" for 22408 and "with top bar holes" for 22409?

I think you got my message the wrong way around. I meant that this part is smooth (in comparison to 22409) and that 22409 is jagged.

Indeed, got it the wrong way, sorry. But this one is also castellated, so not so smooth...

Currently working on 22409, so I'll finally have to sort this out anyway ;)
We could also use castellated for 408, jagged for 409?

Sounds good to me. I was not very convinced of "smooth" either.
