LEGO Maniac Kidvention
Writeup by Tim Courtney

The week of July 12-15, 2000, representatives of LDraw.org set up a display at the Lego Maniac Kidvention held at LEGOLAND California to help spread the word about LDraw and the online Lego community. Among the people there were Tim Courtney, Terry Keller, Bram Lambrecht, Mike Poindexter, and Thomas Michon and family.

The event was a success, allthough we soon found out we couldn't demonstrate the tools on our computers because the outside sun was too bright. So, we were restricted to showing printed screenshots and the amazing renderings we had printed in poster form. Nonetheless, the display was a big hit, and many kids and parents went away excited about what they can do at home using LDraw.

Among the models present were some Model of the Month Winners - Bram Lambrecht's Pentapterigoid Fighter and Eric Kingsley's B-Wing Fighter, Terry Keller's amazing creations - the AH-64D Apache (editor's note: this model has since been selected for Model of the Month), his Sukhoi fighter, and X-Wing fighter. Also, Joseph Gonzalez's S.S. Verne submarine, Larry Pieniazek's Hopper Car, Dan Siskind's Light Tank MK-1, and my E-43 Transport. There were many other posters of virtual models which did not have physical equivalents on display.

One of the highlights of the demonstrations was the park guests got to see a model in the process of being built from instructions made using LDraw tools! The group of demonstrators built Jin Sato's MIBO robotic (Mindstorms) dog. This model is an engineering marvel, and it was a real crowd pleaser too! Mike Poindexter and I took turns taking the dog throughout the park, setting it down, and running its walk and sit programs for unsuspecting guests who subsequently fell in love with the model.

This marks the first time LEGO and LDraw worked together on an event, and it built a good foundation for a working relationship.

The Greater Midwest LEGO Train Club also set up opposite LDraw.org and their amazing layout was even more of a draw than LDraw was.

More pictures of the event can be found in this Brickshelf folder.
