The measurement of the pattern was based on how the part shows in LDD, but the pattern itself was created using Philo's Intersector.

I also started working on a "hi-res" version, but the file size seemed too large for any real gains within LDraw (about 26 KB).

The hi-res version can be located here: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/59864198/LDraw/Parts/3005pe4_hi.dat

Have you tried LDPattern Creator? It's much easier to use to create patterns than Intersector, and provides better results (Intersector doesn't give very good triangulation)

I've looked at Pattern Creator, but not actually tried it.

In the case of this part, as the pattern is just made of circles I figured cutting out a few circles shouldn't create any real issues. For more complex parts I would certainly go with your suggestion.

Have a look to your pattern using LDView multicolor mode, you'll see that there are many useless triangle/quads splits. This is easily avoided using LDPC... Intersector is definitely not the best for that...

Are the dimension different from "my" 4586822a.dat ?
If not, it would be great to subpart 4586822a.dat and use the subpart twice.

The dimensions are similar, but the black outline is thinner.

I will be shortly submitting an updated version, as I have decided to get to grips with LD Pattern Creator.

I will probably create an eye subpart, as suggested, as there is a 2 x 2 brick that also uses the same pattern.

Eye updated using LD Pattern Creator (thanks for the tip, Philo! It's very useful!).

The eye is now a subpart as the same design is also used in 3003pe3.

Excessive use of decimals.
IMO, a "simple" pattern like this could be reduced down to only two decimals.
Accuracy is more important than the number of decimals.
