This highly symmetrical file could be split in two, to reduce the file size,
and then be used four times in the main file.

there is a conditional line appearing in front of surface, when viewing from rear.
see http://c-force.org/ldraw/wings1.png

the surface you extracted for the pattern is only one of three decorated regions: the one you uploaded, the red borderline below, and the lower feathers in tan color, since the main part color is dark blue (as the middle part with neck connector). are you going to split the part into more pieces (i know this is a hard work)?

Delete cond line. Is it necessary to split part into more peaces? I think we can paint half of feathers. It is will be not the best way, but it will be hard to split them.

maybe some of the senior part authors can give an idea what to do here. painting every feather is just as much work as moving them to another file...

As you say, painting feather work is more or less equivallent to separating them. As for now we have only one pattern, I'd suggest to use a single painted subfile.

i noticed some possibilities for improvement:

1) there is a rounding error at line
4 16 40.417 -5.016 0 40.417 -5.016 2.873 13.289 -3.54 2.873 26.8554 -4.27813 0
this should be changed into
4 16 40.417 -5.016 0 40.417 -5.016 2.873 13.289 -3.54 2.873 26.855 -4.278 0

2) there is one wrong edge at
2 24 30.669 19.126 1.376 29.227 16.871 1.966
the edge should be
2 24 30.669 19.126 1.376 30.1 17.937 1.584

3) the following conditional lines should IMHO be edgelines, compared to original part (edge visible):
5 24 0 16.73 0.757 0 17.758 0.449 -1.066 17.211 1.149 1.066 17.211 1.149
5 24 0 16.672 1.437 0 16.73 0.757 -1.066 17.211 1.149 1.066 17.211 1.149
5 24 0 10.104 1.697 0 16.03 1.702 -1.202 15.742 2.206 1.202 15.742 2.206
5 24 0 16.03 1.702 0 16.672 1.437 -1.202 15.742 2.206 1.202 15.742 2.206
5 24 0 17.758 0.449 0 17.758 0 -1.117 18.443 0.694 1.117 18.443 0.694

i think it should be changed to
2 24 0 16.73 0.757 0 17.758 0.449
2 24 0 16.672 1.437 0 16.73 0.757
2 24 0 10.104 1.697 0 16.03 1.702
2 24 0 16.03 1.702 0 16.672 1.437
2 24 0 17.758 0.449 0 17.758 0

Confirmed. There is a hairline gap.
2.)
Yes, I agree. Replace/create corresponding new cond-lines.
3.)
Yes, I agree. But they should be placed in the mainfile to avoid unnecessary
duplication when the subfiles are placed mirrored next to each other.

Comming back to 2.)
I think that the two triangles along this line:
2 24 30.669 19.126 1.376 29.227 16.871 1.966
is wrong.
I have seen this error in many files from LDD.
Create two new triangles across that line instead.

there was no activity here a long time, so i fixed the mentioned points 1) to 3) and inlined the subpart.

@angmarec: i hope that was ok for you?

@magfors: i decided to not recreate the 'wrong' triangles, because of a resulting smooth shading distortion.

But there are few things, that need to be solved:
What's the special "Mummy" thing here?
Description should optimized.
Due to this subpart there is an unwanted edge between the connector and the wing itself in the main part.

I think these issues has to be fixed.

This quad is bleeding through top surface:
4 12 58.385 -2.466 0 58.385 -2.466 2.86 59.745 -7.296 2.873 59.745 -7.296 0

These triangles are concave, and should be changed to convex:
3 13 29.227 16.871 1.966 30.669 19.126 1.376 30.646 19.134 2.075
3 5 30.1 17.937 1.584 30.669 19.126 1.376 29.227 16.871 1.966

This line don't follow the correct path/surface:
2 4 101.96 -2.182 1.36 105.328 -1.601 1.42
2 4 105.328 -1.601 1.42 113.886 -0.731 1.357
2 4 106.051 -1.688 1.353 105.328 -1.601 1.42

All these errors are also present in the patterned part.
