hmm, I don't really see a necessity for this being a subfile...
this appears a little overkill to me.
intuitively, I would have expected all the pattern in the
parent file simply, as the pattern is not so complex.

There are equivalent tiles for the other three cardinal compass points (E, S, W), which I'm guessing will be able to re-use this subpart. But the justification is still marginal in my opinion.
