Part 86849 looks like the chromed counterpart of 62462

I don't think "Chromed" is the right word to use here.
IMO, this is the 'naked' piece to be painted in "Metallic_Silver"

This is definitely the after-painted version of the part.

TUBE W/DOUBLE O4.85 LAQU

(though, I'd submit that "lacquered" is better than "chromed" in this case)

I don't like the word "chrome" in this context. It is misleading.
(Why are we even using the LEGO description of these colours?)

This would also mean that, if I'm reading all the different sources correct,
there is a clear connection between LEGOID 298 (Cool Silver, Drum Lacquered) and Ldraw CODE 80 (Metallic_Silver)

I don't think it is about the 'colour', more about the 'production technique'. This is not a Physical_Colour part, but a design ID alias. Would it be better if we just used 'lacquered'?

For future reference (mostly just to clear my hold :-))

62462 is the -- original -- ABS version of the part (including WARM GOLD, SILVER METALLIC, and TITANIUM METALLIC). It replaced design 75535

86849 is the chrome lacquered part (painted)

15555 is the inked part

29219 is the new ABS version of the part (but no metallic colors, so far: since there are gold, silver, copper and titanium inks, it's unlikely as well that it will ever have metallic colors)
