2861c01 is a number invented by LDraw. Since it has never been released could we just rename it to 75542?

definetely, yes.

HOWEVER:

I would very much like to suggest that THEN
all the ...cXX shortcuts on page
http://www.ldraw.org/cgi-bin/ptreviewsummary.cgi?f=traintrack9v
get THAT number as well.
Otherwise, we would have ...c00 and ...c02, but no ...c01,
and that gap is ugly.

I suggest that we use the proper number for the part,
and then use c01, c02, c03 etc. for the shortcuts.

The same should be done with the opposite train point.

unfortunately, this will mean a lot of work for the poor PT admin,
especially because as well the subparts MAYBE need renumbering.

However, the end result of having a consistent numbering
IMHO is worth the effort. If I can be of any help, let me know.
