Hmmmm, the more combinations of differently colored
minifig legs with hips I see here on the PT,
the more I get doubts if this is really a Good Idea (TM).
Aren't we cluttering our parts library utterly which
such a combinatoric explosion?

I raised up some discussion on LUGNET some time back and seems that this is to keep compability with LEGO Digital Designer. Though, I'm still against this idea, we could just IMHO have a text file having all item ID:s..

Philo's hold still applies. The title is "Hips and Legs", so the hip color should come first.

That lugnet link doesn't entirely apply here.

It discusses hard-coded colors on primitive parts, and this is a different situation.

Parts come in three varieties: primitives, decorated, and assemblies. This is a case of an assembly. Using the 0 hint line or external "database files" doesn't properly represent the N subparts with potentially N different colors that come in an assembly, let alone their transformations relative to one another.

All that said, I personally feel that item numbers *should* be in the library, but NOT like they are here. They should be handled separately from design numbers, and having THIS part in the parts/ directory breaks that.

With this format, there is no way to properly differentiate between 73200 (the item code representing MINI BODY LOWER PART in Bright Yellow), and 73200 (the design code that represents the assembly MINI BODY LOWER PART made up of 3815 and 2x 3816 in non-specific colors).

If I were to vote on this, I would not certify it.

As to the point of having item codes in the library, that pre-dates the availability of LEGO Digital Designer. The best current reason to present codes in that format is that it appears in the BOM at the end of all TLG BI issued since 2006. It is the only user-facing set of codes available, and so it connects the casual builder -- who has a chance to find the code visually using publicly available, professionally prepared documentation -- to the parts he or she might want to build with in an LCAD tool. That fact that it speaks a common language with LDD is simply icing on the cake.

oops, probably not super relevant, but legs are 3815+3816+3817, not 3815+2x 3816. :)

Yes. This is composed by hips + left leg + right leg. So using three different numbers are quite ok :)

@dulcoin
As this is a "Unofficial_Shortcut Physical_Colour" it should be clear that this is not the disign number, but the item number. If I am not complete misunderstood our naming scheme. If that is not stated it should be the design number that we use.

I think you completely missed my point, Mike.

The lugnet thread complains about part bloat when the files are items files that are simple hard-coded colors referring to color-16 design files.

This is not a case of that, this is an assembly and it is different.

Ok, I did not had a look into the mentioned thread.
But this discussion had been done long before.
The question was: Should we have fixed colored parts in the library?
The consens at that time was (if i remember right) yes, because interchangability with LDD and the numbers written in the official building instruction.

Mike,

Please read my comments again. You are restating exactly what I wrote! I am not against having item .DAT files in LDRAW, but I am against having them mixed in with, or same-named as, design .DAT files. And I gave a really good example: 72300 is both an item and a design.

Obviously, my stance on this was changed after I submitted this file 5 years ago, and I no longer support its inclusion in parts/

My stance on using all the codes we have available and in as official a way as possible will never change. These are things that James wanted, from the start.

Ok, now I got you!
You say there are designid.dat that could (and for sure will) collidate with itemid.dat files as they resist both in /parts.

I have never thought about this can happen.

So we need quickly a solution for that! I'll rise a thread in the forum for that, because that is really a big issue that have deep impact to the library.
