The part is far more a panel than a beam... so IMHO the title should be "Technic Panel Side Flaring Intake 4 x 6 & 1/2" or something similar.
Additionally IMHO the part should be re-orientated with rotmatrix {0 -1 0 1 0 0 0 0 1}. The part shouldn't look just like a block in the default view but show off its details IMHO (again). Imagine an ldrawer looking for this part in MLCad - not knowing its name he would probably go look through the 'part gallery' for this. I'd myself want him to recognize this part once he sees it!

I am not against a name change, otoh many parts uses the main connection part + qualifiers (eg. brick with...).
As for the orientation, basically you are right (though the shape is quite recognizable like this - you can also use a REAL 3D cad (LeoCAD) that allows to change the orientation of the parts preview window ;o)
But I am VERY reluctant to change orientation now, many NXT2 models in the world already use it and would be broken. Yeah, yeah, I know, unofficial, use it at your own risk, etc, etc...

Well, in that case...
Why mlcad had to be abandoned? :-(

Don't worry, I won't start a flame war ;o) But I keep on promoting LeoCAD which is ignored by so many people... It remains by far my favorite CAD program to create models, even if I use MLCad a lot for parts.

So true. :-) Maybe I should give another shot for LeoCAD again.

Sorry, but I have to withdraw this certify. I don't want the NXT models break but I also don't want a new part with a broken orientation into the library..

I feel orientation is well choosen as it is titled as a beam with extensions and the beam portion is according to our other beams.

But it's not a beam, it's a *panel*!

That is question of point of view.
Is this a beam with extension (like it is called now and also the orientation) or a panel with fixing by a beam.
I think both is correct. If I would be convienced by your point of view I would go to hold, even if thereby existing models to be broken (sorry Philo). I would support maybe turn of this part by 180 degree about y-axis to show the fixing beam.

Well I see this part as a panel with a beam since this part is mainly used as a panel and its bulk geometry is a panel.
Even if it was seen as a beam with a panel extension (which I, with all respect, see as completely pointless), the default view should be showing the part's geometry. I mean, look at the part image! I bet an end user would have some hard time recognizing this part in a parts gallery...
Sorry Philo, but I feel this is what we have to do.

I can see your concerns about showing the user more of the geometry of this part. That is why I suggested to rotate about Y-axis. I don't think that we should rotate this part according your suggestion. With your suggestion we brake our rule to align parts the same way. And this part will surely be used with other beams also.

But this part is mistitled!! It is *not* a beam by main purpose, it's a *panel*! It should be "Technic Panel 4 x 6 Side Flaring Intake with Beam 3" or something like that. And orientation should be translated by <0 -1 0 1 0 0 0 0 1>.

Do you have a sample from the current official files that strongen your arguments? (As you want to have something changed I feel it is up to you to convience us.)

There is no official part akin to this one, this part is "one of a kind" in the sense. The panel fairings, however, come closest and they all have the main surface in +X direction where this has it in the -Y direction.
I insist, the default view does not show the details of the part nor is the title OK. In any case, this is not a beam!

Back in 2009 there has been a suggestion to rename this file:
Technic Panel Side Flaring Intake 4 x 6 & 1/2
Today I think it should be:
Technic Panel Side Flaring Intake 4 x 6.5
Anybody against this title change?
