Have you seen also the part from LEGO that we got? Please see here: http://www.ldraw.org/Article490.html

I hadn't no, but isn't that 47976? That said, the parts are pretty similar - might be scope for subfiling the common bits.

No, subfileing is not needed, because the file only has the wrong filename. In the file itself the correct number is mentioned. So you improve your part with original data!.
Also it is a good idea to follow these (http://www.ldraw.org/library/tracker/ref/filetypesfaq/) guidelines if you are gonna making subfiles!
Otherwise very good work!

Oh, very good :-) I hope I haven't duplicated anyone else's work, then!

Looking at the picture here http://www.peeron.com/inv/parts/47976 it does rather look as if the only difference between the two parts is the corners. I don't have a 47976 for comparison, though, so I could be mistaken.

Assuming that the undersides are basically the same, corners excepted, one possible way to do it would be:

- modify my 52040a to remove the corner axlehole etc
- new subfile 52040b which adds the axlehole to 52040a
- new subfile 47976a which adds the peg to 52040a
- new subfile 52040c (or 47976b :-) which contains the rest of the top surface of the part plus the centre box/tubes

Then 52040 just uses 52040b and 52040c/47976b, and 47976 uses 47976a and 52040c/47976b. Or something like that! :-)

There are several parts that share pegs in corner, so factoring that would be great indeed (http://www.peeron.com/cgi-bin/invcgis/psearch?query=brick+peg&limit=none)

Actually, yes you did duplicate work, because I already selected it here http://www.ldraw.org/Article490.html, but you probably weren't to know, and I hadn't submitted. I'll take a look at how we each approached this.
Definitely 47976 and 52040 should and can share subparts, because that's even what LEGO did. If you look on the underside of a 47976, at least, you will see both numbers. Its possible that the mould has separate "slugs" that can be inserted for the different parts, or one mould was machined from the other. In fact that's why I had withheld my 47976, because I've not yet located a copy of 52040 which I'm sure I have somewhere.

Heh :-) Maybe we could compare scans of the parts? I only have 52040 myself.

sorry, didn't notice the discussion going on here.
my certify vote just indicates that this part is technically fine.
should you decide to change subfile structure, just go ahead.
I'll happily restore the certify vote then.

- moved studs from \s subfile to here to avoid differently rotated logos
- used more stugs
