Lots and lots of non-coplanar quads. Could spring2dat be used to generate this file?

It's created with MLCAD spring Generator.
Copyright Marc Klein and add to MLCAD by Michael Lachmann.

If anybody have a suggestion for create a better spring without bad vertices and add optional lines, contact me.

Downgrading to no-vote after reading the comments to this spring http://www.ldraw.org/cgi-bin/ptdetail.cgi?f=parts/x328b.dat

Specifically, "I've been informed that using the -det option with l3p -check can cause problems with larger parts"

Suggest/request that name change (for all 4 in this family) from "Type" to "Position"

48918.dat
48918a.dat
48918b.dat
48918c.dat
need renumbering IMHO.
Maybe ...c01 to ...c04 are appropriate?

Additionally, using "Type 1" to "Type 4" is totally inappropriate here IMHO.
These aren't different types, but just different compression states.

Maybe we could have a look at the pneumatic parts
and copy the spring naming scheme from there?

I like the 48918a-c naming.. but the letters are a little inappropriately used. I myself would see:
49818.dat -> 48918a.dat
48918a.dat -> 48918b.dat
48918b.dat -> 48918c.dat
48918c.dat -> 48918d.dat

I agree about titles though. Maybe we could specify contraction in thirds..?
48918a.dat: (Extended)
48918b.dat: (1/3 Contracted)
48918c.dat: (2/3 Contracted)
48918d.dat: (Contracted)

Or use Joshua's suggestion and name these (Position 1-4).

Your suggestion for file name is ok. For the part description I would like to see 'position 1-4' as this is also mentioned in the main part.

And I also note that this shock absorber is not flexible at all. Some parts of the Dirt Crusher are, which led to Peeron naming nearly all Dirt Crusher parts as "flexible". And the flexible was carried onto here.

I'm OK with using ....a, ....b, etc. suffixes for configurational varients of the same part. We have a precedent in 70450a/b. I have updated the Part Numbers FAQ http://www.ldraw.org/library/tracker/ref/numberfaq/

hmm, I disagree. we have introduced the c01, c02, c03, c04, ...
suffixes for this purpose for stickers
and its formed variants.

why not use the same scheme for springs?
why use a,b,c,d,... there?

That's a good analogue that I'd not thought of. Does anyone know whether this (Extended) configuration is the part's natural relaxed state? I'm thinking that 48918 (with no suffix) should be the natural state and c01, c02, ... the "formed" states.

Actually the part can be locked into any of the four positions. There is no state it "defaults" to. But I think using the relaxed/extended state as the default would be a good idea nevertheless.
