Finally settled on an arrangement. The sub-parts would be reusable in this configuration with a good balance between number of placements and size of files.

Intresting set of subfiles.
It's allways a good idea to avoid t-junctions, byt here it results in this:
Line 95: Colinear vertices found. 3 16 240 24 120 81 24 116 79 24 116
Line 97: Colinear vertices found. 3 16 240 24 120 41 24 116 39 24 116
Line 101: Colinear vertices found. 3 16 -39 24 116 -41 24 116 -240 24 120
Line 103: Colinear vertices found. 3 16 -79 24 116 -81 24 116 -240 24 120
Line 121: Colinear vertices found. 3 16 -240 24 -120 -81 24 -116 -79 24 -116
Line 123: Colinear vertices found. 3 16 -240 24 -120 -41 24 -116 -39 24 -116
Line 127: Colinear vertices found. 3 16 39 24 -116 41 24 -116 240 24 -120
Line 129: Colinear vertices found. 3 16 79 24 -116 81 24 -116 240 24 -120
I think it would be OK with just four quads around this base surface.

I went back and forth on the bottom edges. When I used just the four quads the T's really stood out in LDView with red back-faces turned on. I did note that the angles here are less than LDDP's default tolerance, but are greater than .01, and the shortest edges are 2 LDU wide.

LDraw specs says:
"must not be greater than 179.9 degrees or smaller than 0.025 degrees".

resolved by adding seam at x=0, no T's, no extremely acute angles.
