isn't this a subpart?
(suggested filename e.g. parts/s/43903a.dat)

This is a "pseudo part" used to create different track geometries. See parts 680/681/682

But then, how the average MLCad user would find these elements?

Belt is not a valid category. The main part does have !CATEGORY Car, but as this part is (currently) in parts/, !CATEGORY has to be added here too.

the filetype in the header IMHO needs to be changed to "subpart".
this IS a subpart.
it is only located in the PARTS folder currently by convention,
because existing tools (like MLCad) have no other means
to offer this file easily to the user in their GUI.
that workaround shouldn't be carried over into the header, too.

Agreed, but then I can't post on PT since it won't be in the right folder!!! What should we do ?

I think in these rare special cases
for now an Admin edit by Chris will do...

Well, why we have a practise, that this is subpart in a parts folder?
When I can see red faces, when BFC is enabled and it's not an error in the part, then it IS a subpart with all its properties.

For parts like this (part of a chain, belt etc) that can be bendet by existing applications (LSynth) we need the single components in the parts folder because otherwise they are not selectable by MLCad.
To achive all necessary we put therefore such parts(subparts) in the parts folder, but with a prefix (Tilde ~). In order to give the viewing application a hint not to show gaps between the bricks in this case for this part, we have the practice to identify those parts as subparts.
That is the reason why we do such funny things with this file.
