A new version of 3731, released in 2013 to run alongside the new ball-and-socket parts for 2014.

http://www.brickset.com/parts/?design=15456

The position of the edge line by the ball is not ideal, and was placed there to align when using primitive substitution.

Edge line ball-shaft is wrong.
I'm not sure about the underside. Neither I own this part nor I have photos of it.

And there is a narrowing of the bar at the base of the ball. I don't know if it's worth modeling this tiny thing, but since it seems to be something functional, I tend to think so. See this photo http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WVBGEBLMKtA/Upuq9eHHntI/AAAAAAAABC4/_tnKjV2X1YI/s1600/DSC05058.png

@MMR1988: Would you be able to advise on the correct location for this
edge line? Would it be similar to part 3731?

The part is available within LDD, so have based the underside on that.

@Philo: I had considered this, so will look into modelling it this
coming weekend. You're right in saying it appears functional, as it
stops the new cup parts from slipping free from the towball.

Just use isecalc for this.
Take both intersecting elements. Make file for each element and execute this programm:

This edge-line is very common.
It is present in every parts with a 8 LDU sphere on a 4 LDU cyli.
How about a new primitive?

I definitely like this idea. I would suggest the origin at the balls outermost point or in its center. It's the easiest way to place the prim in parts IMHO.

Totally agree, but it won't work for this part if we model the groove at base of ball.
Should the primitive only contain the edge line, or a complete geometry (ball+line+bar stub)?

It should be done in the same way we have done for:
Technic Axle Truncated to Fit Ball Joint
Name: axlesphe.dat

There are many parts in our library that could maybe benefit from this like (41895, 32186, 3614, 2508, 3184 etc.)

Updated with groove where cylinder meets sphere, and have used new
primitive to implement correct edge lines.
