About Us

What is LDraw?

LDraw™ is an open standard for LEGO CAD programs that allow the user to create virtual LEGO models and scenes. You can use it to document models you have physically built, create building instructions just like LEGO, render 3D photo realistic images of your virtual models and even make animations. The possibilities are endless. Unlike real LEGO bricks where you are limited by the number of parts and colors, in LDraw nothing is impossible.

A request from the LDraw.org Team
LDraw is and always will be offered free of charge. However, bandwidth is not cheap and LDraw.org accounts for 1/3 of the traffic that our generous host, Peeron.com, sees monthly. If you download, use, and/or enjoy LDraw, please consider a small donation.

Administration Announcement

The lack of parts updates
Over the past couple of years releases of new official parts have been less frequent than in the past. LDraw.org would like to apologise or these delays and explain the reason why.

L(EGO)Draw parts
Members of the Steering Committee (SteerCo) have been in contact with LEGO to look at ways of working together to ease the conversion between the LEGO Digital Designer and the LDraw System Of Tools. This relationship has led the LDraw Steering Committee to the Lego Universe project in regards to it's building tools and such. So to help the process along, The Lego Universe team has started to share information regarding the brick shapes to further the relationship.

As a first bunch we've got data of 80 parts and got permission to share them with the community, with the purpose to make them fit for the LDraw Parts Tracker. We are therefore looking for parts authors who are willing to clean up the rough data, do additional primitive substitution, care for the new header specs, stud orientation, BFC ...

The LDraw.org team are pleased to announce progress towards restarting the regular publication of Parts Library Updates. The complete library has been re-issued with all the file headers now compliant with the new Official Library Header Specification. An important element of this re-issue is the identification of part files that are not re-distributable, having been created or received major contributions from authors who could not be located or who did not affirm the Contributors Agreement.

In addition to separating the parts that are not re-distributable, we have taken the opportunity to separate two additional classes of part files and make their installation optional in a new Windows installation package.

The Alias Parts Library includes generic colour versions of parts that are physically identical to parts in the core parts library, but have a different part number.

The Physical Colour Parts Library includes hard-coded colour versions of parts or composite parts.

The Windows install package for the new library can be found on the Library Updates page. Work is continuing to make this available for Mac and Linux users.

I'd like to thank everyone on the LDraw SteerCo and LDraw Standards Committee who have helped to make this happen.

The LDraw Steering Committee (SteerCo) has been questioned about LDraw.org's policy (as expressed by the Contributor Agreement, other documentation, or tradition) on third parties capitalising on the considerable volunteer time, effort, and ingenuity represented by the part library and the LDraw system?

LDraw's history hasn't been updated for a long time. With permission from BrickJournal publisher Joe Meno we are going to mirror an article published in BrickJournal, Spring 2006, Volume #1, Issue 4, which covers also the missing years 'til 2004. This leaves us with 2005, 2006 and 2007. Browsing the various newsgroups a Lugnet I compiled a chart of the highlights, but the list is far from being complete. Feel free to add the missing pieces to this post at Lugnet.
