LEGO Digital Designer

  Popular
Description: The designer, also known as LDD, is a free virtual design studio for PC and MAC OS X created by the LEGO Group. It's targeted at kids and novice users. Once you’ve finished your model, you can order the bricks from the LEGO factory and show off your design in a online Gallery.

Though it supports the import and export of LDraw models, not all LDraw models will necessarily import successfully (and models created in LDD may not be complete when exported to LDraw format), because LDD uses its own file format .lxf and parts library, which is not aligned with LDraw's.

Bricksmith provides a spinnable 3D model view, a fast, comprehensive part browser, easy access to the full color palette, and inspectors to tweak part components. It also supports submodels (MPD), steps, and primitives, as well as the usual features you expect in a Mac application (undo, copying, scrolling, and drag-and-drop reordering of file contents).

LDLite

  Popular
Description: LDLite is a Windows-based replacement for LDRAW, and can be integrated with your browser to view DAT files while surfing the web. I created LDLite as an open-source alternative because LDRAW would not work in more than 640x480 resolution on my machine. Along the way, and with help from half a dozen programmers from the LCAD list, it became 10 times faster than LDRAW, easier to use, prettier to look at, and now supports an extended syntax with support for MPD files.

Source code for LDLite is available and is distributed under the GPL. It contains a lex/yacc parser for the .DAT, .LDL and .MPD syntax and a z-buffer rendering engine.

LDraw Add-on (LDAO)

  Popular
Description: LDraw Add-On (LDAO) is a general-use shell and editing program for LDraw DAT files. At the most basic level, it can be used to simplify launching LDraw and LEdit. LDAO also provides a browseable Visual Element Catalog, to make it easier to locate specific LDraw parts.

There are three different editing interfaces included: one is a straight-forward text editor, with LDraw-specific features. A second editor, called the Modeler, provides more of an LEdit-style environment. The third editor is used to create and pose mini-figures.

LDAO also includes a number of utilities, to inline subfiles, update models when parts are renumbered, or generate specific LDraw code for new part files.

Finally, LDAO can be configured to launch other LDraw-related programs.

LDGLite

  Popular
Description: LDGLite is an OpenGL based port of LDLite 1.6. Because OpenGL is portable, LDGLite has been used successfully on Linux, BSD, Macintosh, and Windows. The source code is available and is distributed under the GPL.

In addition to many of the features of LDLite 1.6, the current version of LDGLite also includes some extra goodies graciously provided by various programmers from the LCAD group. The L3 parser is available in addition to the LDLite parser. PNG and 8 bit BMP output is supported. LDGLite also allows you to rotate the model with the mouse and pan around with the arrow keys. Full 3D hardware acceleration should be available with the appropriate OpenGL video drivers. Unfortunately the LDGLite GUI is currently somewhat weak compared to the other LCAD viewers listed.

L3Lab

  Popular
Description: L3Lab is a DAT/MPD file viewer. You can choose from 15 predefined view angles, or you can use the mouse to rotate the object. L3Lab features many view options to toggle shading, dithering, transparency, POV-like look with seams, random colors of parts/faces, which linetypes to show, highlighting of edges, etc.

You can pop up a window and examine a tree view of the model, its parts, their primitives, right down to the basic linetypes. L3Lab also provides various statistics for the technical interested: timing, total count of linetypes, sizes (boundingboxes) of model and all parts/primitives, the current view matrix, etc.

L3Lab doesn't use OpenGL, DirectX or other external packages, yet it is very fast. It is written in C++ and uses Z-buffer rendering.

LDView

  Popular
Description: LDView is a real-time 3D viewer for displaying LDraw models using hardware-accellerated 3D graphics. It was written using OpenGL, so should be accelerated on any video card which provides full OpenGL 3D accelleration (so-called mini-drivers are not likely to work). It should also work on other video cards using OpenGL software rendering, albeit at a much slower speed.

The program can read LDraw DAT files as well as MPD files. It then allows you to rotate the model around to any angle with the mouse. A fast computer or a video card with T&L support (Transform & Lighting) is strongly recommended for displaying complex models. A German and Italian language module are available.
