The LDraw Administration Team proudly presents the second RACHAL – The RAytraching CHALlenge to spur people's creativity and show different interpretations of the same source material. Please note that this is not a contest! All entries will be added immediately to a gallery at LDraw.org to be shown but not voted.
We know that you would prefer reading about new parts updates announcements
instead of politics and bureaucratics, but unfortunately those things also have
to be done and decided on in order to ensure the smooth running of LDraw.org.
As you know we have two elected bodies, the Steering Committee (SteerCo) as the
overall governing structure and the LDraw Standards Committee (LSC) as the
technical standards board charged with discussing, ratifying, and publishing
LDraw.org file format specifications. Beside those two groups LDraw is run by
other boards like the Content Management, the Helpdesk, the System
Administration and last but certainly not least the Parts Tracker
Administration. Since they each require specific skills and knowledge and also
because they existed long before LDraw was turned into a democratic organization
the volunteers occupying those positions never underwent an election and it has
been tradition that outgoing members pass over the sceptre of their little
kingdom to someone they thought could fill their boots.
The SteerCo has been questioned about the accountability of the "chairs" at
LDraw. Are they appointed, elected, etc.? Are those positions sandboxes to play
with "until I‘m bored with it?; a job for life", or is the site the community‘s
window to the world? If these volunteers, the PT admins or the helpdesker do a
bad job, is there a way for the community to "fire" them? A highly delicate
issue as you can imagine.
As we move forward on the Contributor Agreement for the Parts Library it is important that we have community input. This LUGNET thread has been created in order to discuss some of these issues and it would be appreciated if people took the time to read it and to comment if they feel the need.

The LDraw Administration Team proudly presents Rachal – The RAytraching CHALlenge to spur people's creativity and show different interpretations of the same source material. Please note that this is not a contest! All entries will be added immediately to a gallery at LDraw.org to be shown but not voted. We also plan to run this challenge quarterly.
The LDraw Administration Team proudly presents the POTM – Part Of The Month contest for LDraw Part Authors. It is no news that programmers get most of the spotlight and little goes to "the unsung heroes of the LDraw CAD world" - this contest should give more visibility to the author's work. The POTM contest has two categories:
- Best part
- Most desired part
All entries will run in both categories. People can vote for parts that they are happy about due to their own desire to use the parts, and also vote for the parts that took the most apparent effort.
The James Jessiman Memorial Award was established by the Jessiman Family to honor an individual who has contributed to the furthering of LDraw, the DAT format, and James' memory.
This year the LDraw.org Steering Committee is please to announce the award is presented to Orion Pobursky!
We are pleased to announce the relaunch of LDraw.org's MOTM/SOTM contest.
Moving the curatorship has caused some trouble, but now we are back on track
and open submissions to MOTM/SOTM once again. Have a look at:

Read the rules and submit you model or scene. We are aware that there is little
time left for the October contest, which exceptionally will close the 27th, but
we seek some more entries in addition to the stuff which has been collected from
the beginning of the year.

I'm pleased to announce the relaunch of LDraw.org's MOTM/SOTM contest. After writing a few thousand lines of code, the core functionality for the new contest and voting module finished. There's not a whole lot different visually but the archive functionality has been increased. I welcome any ideas regarding the user front end. Have a look here:

I now hand the contest back to the fans of LDraw and open submissions to MOTM/SOTM once again. Read the rules and submit you model or scene. The December contest opens on Friday, December 2nd.
-Orion
P.S. Since I'm still flush with accomplishment, there might be a prize to the December winners.

Peeron, LDraw.org's gracious hosts, have begun a fundraising drive to purchase a new server.
"We're looking to upgrade Peeron's server to ensure the service continues to be
fast and useful. With over 80,000 visitors a month to Peeron.com, and another
40,000 to LDraw.org (which Peeron donates free space on the server for), the
speed and stability of our services has slowed." --Dan and Jennifer Boger, Peeron.com
To read more about the donation drive, see the LUGNET Announcement and the Peeron Donation Drive page.

LDraw.org celebrates five years of being online today. The project began in early 1999 and launched to the public on July 7 of that year, almost two years after James Jessiman passed away. Since then, both the site and the community have grown leaps and bounds. Thanks to everyone who has contributed over the years!
Take a stroll down memory lane, see the original announcement here.
Here's to another five years!
